Nature-based solutions (NbS) are redefining how we approach residential architecture, especially in urban areas facing climate stress and environmental degradation. By integrating features like green roofs, living walls, and rain gardens, buildings can actively contribute to healthier cities. These solutions help regulate temperature, manage stormwater, improve air quality, and support biodiversity—all while enhancing the visual and emotional appeal of urban living.
In Serbia, the momentum for NbS is growing. Last week, ENOVA hosted a workshop under the project “Integration of Nature-Based Solutions into Energy Efficiency Renovation of Residential Buildings in Serbia.” The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Ministry of Mining and Energy, the Ministry for Public Investments, the State Secretariat for Energy, Javno Stambeno Beograd, the Association of Professional Building Managers, Belgrade District Heating Utility, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, IUCN, and several NGOs.
The workshop showcased current EBRD initiatives integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) into energy efficiency renovation projects. International experts from Austria and Italy shared practical insights into implementing green infrastructure on multi-apartment buildings, highlighting the legal frameworks that support these innovations abroad. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to improving energy performance while creating greener, more resilient urban environments.
We are thankful for the opportunity to work alongside this broad coalition of partners who are driving change, from government institutions and utilities to conservation experts and civil society. Their collective efforts are laying the groundwork for a new standard in residential renovation, one that harmonizes energy efficiency with ecological design.
